Otter Creek Wilderness
Heavily logged between 1897 and 1914, the Otter Creek Wilderness has been coming back naturally since the 1920s. Lying in a “bowl” formed by Shavers Mountain and McGowan Mountain, the vegetation now consists of second-growth timber, rhododendron and a variety of mosses. The roughly 20,000 acres reveals its history in old railroad beds, apple orchards, old farmsteads and logging camps. Hunters will find bear, deer, turkey, snowshoe hare in higher elevations, squirrel and grouse, while anglers will enjoy trout fishing in Shavers Fork River, Dry Fork River, Glady Fork, Laurel Fork, Otter Creek and many miles of smaller tributaries.
