Monongahela National Forest Open all year, dawn to dusk Cost: Free Encompassing 100,000 acres of scenic beauty, the Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area contains the highest peak in West Virginia, some of the best rock climbing on the east coast and outstanding views of the great West Virginia mountain landscapes. Located in the Monongahela National Forest, many thousands of acres await discovery, with a portion of the area untouched by man. In other places, you’ll find the remnants of West Virginia’s mountain farmers who struggled to make a living in these steep hills. Directions: Go East from Elkins on US-33 [SR-55] for 34.4 miles
